Why am I a health coach?

I’ve been passionate about the biology of health and longevity for as long as I can remember. I love being active whether that’s hiking, backpacking, photography, learning to surf, or walking my dogs.

I discovered primal and ancestral health in 2012 and it changed my life! Before then I couldn’t properly manage the stress of living in a new city (Phoenix at the time) and teaching under difficult conditions. When I changed my eating and lifestyle habits to better match what my genes expect I realized that I was an 8-cylinder engine that had been running on, maybe, half its capacity! I was stressed, incredibly tired each evening, and didn’t have the energy to enjoy the weekends. The worst part was waking up in the middle of the night with anxiety that kept me from falling back asleep. I rarely felt rested and ready to tackle the day.

All this was just a couple short years after losing my father to cancer. He was just 59.

Not likely being caused by genetic factors, my father died early from nutrition and lifestyle choices. He had little sleep, was over-worked, ate fast food and dinners from the gas station, and stress management wasn’t even on the radar. His body just couldn’t keep up with or repair the damage he caused himself in just a couple short decades.

I was afraid of following in my father’s footsteps.

After diving into the world of primal and ancestral health, I was able to align my nutrition and lifesyle to my goals of feeling fit and happy for myself and my family for years to come.

  • I can work without an energy dip throughout the day.

  • My weekends don’t have to be spent sleeping in and missing out (unless I really want and choose to!).

  • I feel like my life has the perfect balance of challenge and free time.

  • I can sleep through the night - no more waking up in the middle of the night with anxiety.

I have a better sense of what my body needs — I’m more in tune with myself, both mind and body. I have a better sense of who I want to be and the direction of my life.

I’m a coach because I want to help others feel their best. I believe in taking control of one’s life and habits and not feeling so reactive to what life throws at you — but be proactive instead.


What else?

This summer (2019) I married Melinda the most beautiful and strongest woman I’ve ever met. We had two weddings (!!) with a legal ceremony on land and a ceremonial ceremony while on a family cruise to Alaska! We live in Seattle with our three dogs.

Our medium to long term plans are a little interesting…we’re both wanderers and enjoy an adventure. Within the next few years we plan to hit the road and live full-time in our adventure van! What better way to enjoy more time outdoors, give our dogs the best life they deserve, and create the work/life balance we want from scratch.
